Ask an experienced skydiver what they think about before buying a new canopy and they'll almost certainly mention wing loading before they mention brand or colour. It's the single number that tells you more about how a parachute will fly — and how forgiving it will be — than any other figure on the spec sheet.
Yet many skydivers early in their careers treat it as a technicality: something the gear store asks about and then fills in on a form. Understanding what it actually means, and what happens as it changes, is one of the most useful things you can do for your canopy skills.
What wing loading actually measures
Wing loading is the ratio of your exit weight to your canopy's surface area:
Wing loading = exit weight (lbs) ÷ canopy size (sq ft)
Exit weight is your body weight plus everything you're wearing — jumpsuit, helmet, altimeter, and your full rig. A complete container, main canopy, reserve, and AAD typically adds 20–25 lbs (9–11 kg), though it varies by setup.
The result is expressed in pounds per square foot. A 175 lb skydiver with 22 lbs of gear on a 170 sq ft canopy has a wing loading of 1.16 lbs/sq ft. A 130 lb skydiver on the same canopy is at 0.89 lbs/sq ft. Same parachute, meaningfully different aircraft.
Why the number matters
Wing loading affects almost every aspect of canopy flight: how the canopy opens, how fast it flies, how steep the glide is, how hard it flares, and crucially, how much margin it gives you when something goes wrong.
A lightly loaded canopy is slow and forgiving. Turbulence causes it to bounce gently. An off-heading opening gives you time to react. A flare that's slightly too high or too low is recoverable. These characteristics are exactly what new skydivers need while they're learning to read the landing area, judge the wind, and develop consistent technique.
A heavily loaded canopy is fast and responsive. Turbulence hits harder. An off-heading opening can put you on a direct collision course with the ground before you have time to unstow your brakes. A mistimed flare at high speed is far less forgiving than the same mistake on a student canopy. The performance gains from higher loading are real — but so are the consequences of error.
The practical zones
Wing loading doesn't have a single “safe” threshold — the right number depends on your experience, your jump frequency, and the conditions you typically fly in. That said, there are broadly recognised zones:
- Below 0.9 lbs/sq ft — student and trainer canopies. Very slow flight, very forgiving openings, large margin for error. Appropriate while building foundational canopy skills.
- 0.9 to 1.1 lbs/sq ft — the A-licence range for most governing bodies. Still conservative, still forgiving, but with enough responsiveness to develop useful habits.
- 1.1 to 1.3 lbs/sq ft — where most intermediate skydivers settle. More responsive handling, a longer recovery arc in turns, noticeably faster on final. Manageable with solid foundational skills.
- 1.3 to 1.5 lbs/sq ft — advanced territory. Off-heading openings and turbulence are more consequential. Dedicated canopy coaching before stepping into this range is strongly recommended.
- Above 1.5 lbs/sq ft — high performance. Requires formal canopy piloting instruction, consistent high-jump-count flying, and a structured progression plan. Not somewhere to end up by accident.
The variables people forget
Wing loading isn't static. Your body weight changes. Gear changes. Both matter.
A 10 lb weight gain shifts wing loading by about 0.06 lbs/sq ft on a 170 sq ft canopy — which can push someone from the middle of one zone to the edge of the next. Seasonal jumpers who put on weight over winter and then return to their previous canopy may be flying at a higher loading than they last experienced without realising it.
Gear weight also varies more than most people assume. Switching from a lightweight competition suit to a padded freefly suit, adding a camera helmet, or using a larger altimeter can collectively add several pounds. Weigh your complete kit if precision matters.
