Ask most licensed skydivers to rate their canopy flying and they'll mention their wing loading, maybe their toggles-vs-risers preference, possibly a dramatic downwind landing story. Ask them whether they can consistently land within 10 metres of a target in varying wind conditions and the confidence drops significantly.
Landing accuracy — not swooping, not high-performance approaches, just landing where you intend to — is the foundational measure of canopy skill. It's also the one that most skydivers stop actively working on after their A-licence sign-off.
Why accuracy matters beyond competition
The obvious case for landing accuracy is competitive: accuracy landing is one of the oldest disciplines in parachuting, and a significant number of jumpers pursue it seriously. But the argument for accuracy as a general skill is stronger than the competitive one.
A skydiver who can consistently hit a target in varied conditions has demonstrated several things simultaneously: they read the wind accurately, they understand their canopy's glide ratio, they plan a realistic approach, and they execute a consistent flare. These are all load-bearing skills for every jump, not just accuracy competition.
The converse is equally true. A skydiver who can't predict where they'll land within 20 metres is demonstrating that at least one of those four skills is weaker than they probably realise. That matters more when the landing area is unfamiliar, the wind is unusual, or the pattern has been disrupted by other canopies.
The components of a consistent landing
Wind reading. This starts under canopy, not in the landing pattern. Look at the sock, the drift of other canopies, surface indicators (flags, smoke, trees). Build a picture of the wind at different altitudes — surface wind and 1,000-foot wind are often different, and your approach will transition through both.
Pattern planning. A standard pattern gives you a consistent downwind, base, and final leg. What changes is where you start it — closer in high-wind conditions, further out in calm — and how much altitude you have on each leg. If you're making large corrections on final, something went wrong on base. If you're making corrections on base, something went wrong on downwind.
Glide ratio awareness. Every canopy has a characteristic glide ratio, which changes with brake input and wind. Knowing your canopy's flat glide and half-brakes glide is not theoretical knowledge; it's what you use to decide how to set up your final. If you don't know these numbers intuitively, spend a few jumps deliberately measuring them.
Flare timing and technique. A consistent two-stage flare — initiate at a specific altitude relative to the ground, finish at a specific point — is learnable with deliberate repetition. Most landing inconsistency comes from variable flare initiation height, which is itself a function of not actively practicing it.
How to practice deliberately
The single most effective thing you can do is set a specific target before every jump and track whether you hit it. Not a zone, a point: a cone, a spot on the grass, a mark. After the landing, note whether you hit it, which direction you missed, and what you'd adjust.
This sounds obvious, but most skydivers don't do it. They land wherever they land, assess it in general terms (“pretty good”, “a bit long”), and don't track the result across multiple jumps. Without tracking, there's no signal to learn from.
In Jump Logs, your landing notes field is the right place for this. A short entry per jump: target, actual result, one thing to adjust. After ten jumps you'll start seeing whether your misses cluster in a direction — consistently long means your pattern is too wide or you're initiating the flare too early; consistently short means the opposite.
Conditions to seek out
Most landing accuracy practice happens on ideal days. This is useful for building the core skill, but it's not sufficient. The jumps where landing precision matters most are usually the ones with crosswind, gusty conditions, or a disrupted pattern. Deliberately seeking out moderate crosswind conditions — within your skill range — and practicing your accuracy in them is a more direct preparation than only jumping on calm days.
Similarly, practicing approaches from different altitudes — intentionally high or low on base leg — teaches you how to recover and where your margin runs out. This is best done when you have the altitude to correct, not when you need to get it right.
Formal accuracy competition
If you've never jumped an accuracy competition, it's worth trying even if competition isn't your primary interest. The structure — a defined target, a score per jump, immediate objective feedback — is a more effective training environment than recreational jumping. Many skydivers who do one accuracy event find that their general canopy awareness improves for several months afterwards.
Most national governing bodies have beginner accuracy categories with minimal experience requirements. The canopies are typically larger and slower than your regular main, which removes the wing loading variable and isolates the pattern and flare skill.
